UACh aporta datos claves para crear el Santuario en cuenca del lago Tinquilco

El profesor de la Facultad de Ciencias Forestales y Recursos Naturales de la misma casa de estudios y Presidente de Fundación Forecos, Antonio Lara, aportó con estudios técnicos sobre los bosques nativos adultos que se desarrollan en la ladera oeste del lago, señalando que “son bosques que por su composición y estructura son únicos en la Región de La Araucanía. Estos bosques son el hábitat de 40 especies de aves y varias especies de mamíferos en categorías de conservación, como el puma, el pudú y la güiña, así como de anfibios, incluyendo la ranita de Darwin”. Tambien señala que “es satisfactorio ver cómo una iniciativa de conservación de una organización comunitaria legitimada localmente y basada en información científica, pasa a ser parte del Programa Nacional de Protección de Humedales”

El Austral

El Programa Nacional de Protección de Humedales, promovido por el Ministerio del Medio Ambiente, y que contempla un portafolio de 40 humedales priorizados a protegerse entre 2018 y 2022, tiene contemplados dos de estos bellos ecosistemas en La Araucanía: el humedal de Queule (Nueva Toltén) y el del lago Tinquilco (Pucón).

Precisamente en el marco de la postulación del Santuario Cuenca del Lago Tinquilco, de 300 hectáreas, científicos de la Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh) realizaron estudios para ser incorporados a la carpeta, motivados por su compromiso con la conservación y protección medioambiental.

Esta iniciativa de la organización comunitaria Comité de Protección y Desarrollo Sustentable Tinquilco (Comité Tinquilco) fue presentada ante el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente. Este Santuario de gran relevancia es colindante al Parque Nacional Huerquehue y sería el primero de la Región de la Araucanía.

ESTUDIOS

Los estudios realizados por investigadores de la UACh incluyeron el lago Tinquilco y los bosques nativos de su cuenca, los cuales protegen este cuerpo de agua y otorgan una gran belleza escénica, que es única y que atrae a más de 50 mil visitantes al año. Es uno de los principales destinos turísticos en la comuna de Pucón, por lo que está expuesto a fuertes amenazas y, para los investigadores, es necesario aumentar su protección para garantizar su conservación y para que siga otorgando beneficios a la sociedad.

SITIO DE ALTO VALOR

Para la elaboración de la propuesta, uno de los aspectos que fue estudiado es la calidad del agua, labor que realizaron los académicos Stefan Woelfl y Jorge Nimptsch, ambos de la Facultad de Ciencias de la UACh. Según las conclusiones de este estudio, que calificó las aguas del lago Tinquilco como oligotróficas y de gran pristinidad, “es necesario proteger el lago ya que por sus características naturales corresponde a un ambiente lacustre de alto valor, siendo al mismo tiempo vulnerable frente a cualquier alteración de su cuenca“.

El profesor de la Facultad de Ciencias Forestales y Recursos Naturales de la misma casa de estudios y Presidente de Fundación Forecos, Antonio Lara, aportó con estudios técnicos sobre los bosques nativos adultos que se desarrollan en la ladera oeste del lago, señalando que “son bosques que por su composición y estructura son únicos en la Región de La Araucanía. Por su parte, el doctor Alvaro Gutiérrez, quien fuera investigador postdoctoral del Instituto de Conservación Biodiversidad y Territorio de la UACh, realizó una investigación de los bosques antiguos en la Cuenca del lago Tinquilco.

Otra dimensión del aporte del doctor Lara fue en el establecimiento de los límites y zonificación del santuario.

“Hicimos el ejercicio de delimitar el santuario considerando dos opciones: un diseño óptimo que incluyera toda la cuenca del lago Tinquilco y otra enfocada en la factibilidad de lograr su pronta creación. Optamos por la segunda que considera el lago Tinquilco como bien nacional de uso público y a los 40 propietarios que adhirieron a que sus predios fueran parte del Santuario, totalizando 300 hectáreas”, señaló el doctor Lara.

PROPUESTA

Debido a su calidad técnica, esta propuesta presentada en enero de 2018, tuvo una rápida tramitación y fue aprobada por el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente en marzo y por el Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales en julio, estando a la espera de su aprobación por el Consejo de Ministros para la Sustentabilidad. No obstante, el proceso de creación ha sido dilatado debido a la oposición de un grupo de vecinos del sector cuyas propiedades no están incluidas en el Santuario.

El doctor Lara se mantiene optimista respecto de su materialización, señalando que “es satisfactorio ver cómo una iniciativa de conservación de una organización comunitaria legitimada localmente y basada en información científica, pasa a ser parte del Programa Nacional de Protección de Humedales”.
