Humedales protectores de Valdivia

En las últimos 3 días han caído al menos 210 mm de precipitaciones, lo cual ha generado inundaciones en algunos sectores de Valdivia y la región de los ríos. Es en estos días, es cuando realmente se puede apreciar el efecto amortiguador de las inundaciones que realizan nuestros humedales. Estos al estar localizados en terrenos bajos, con abundante vegetación acumulan, conducen  y reducen la velocidad del flujo del agua, ahorrándole miles de millones de pesos en colectores de aguas lluvias al estado, gracias a un servicio ecosistema generado gratuitamente para toda la sociedad y el medio ambiente. Sin embargo, ésto también genera riesgos para quienes establecen sus viviendas y actividades productivas en estas zonas. 

Durante ésta ultima tormenta realizamos un recorrido rápido por distintos sectores de la ciudad  y particularmente por el sector sur de Valdivia (Fotos y videos más abajo). Así apreciamos como sectores como la calle Don  Bosco,  los Robles, Barrios Bajos e incluso la costanera de Valdivia se inundan en pocas horas en los lugares más bajos donde las pendiente indica que antiguamente había un humedal, pese a todo la ciudad sigue funcionando con relativa normalidad comparado con lo que ocurre en Santiago u otras ciudades luego de un par de horas de lluvia. Esto mismo nos indica que tenemos que ser extremadamente cuidadosos a la hora de decidir donde se va a construir. A medida que la ciudad crece aumenta la superficie de suelo impermeable en desmedro de aquellos que nos ayudan a controlar las inundaciones como Bosques, Praderas y Humedales, naturalmente el agua tiende a fluir desde las zonas altas a las más bajas.

El día 3 de agosto habíamos realizado un monitoreo de fotopuntos en los Humedales de Santo Domingo y hoy lo repetimos en algunos puntos.  Al visitar los humedales durante la tormenta del 6 de agosto, se apreciaba como rápidamente el agua recupera su curso y los drenes construidos rápidamente empiezan a colapsar. También se ve como los humedales alrededor del cauce permanente del río  Santo Domingo, se inundan y contienen la inundación, esto ocurre en la mayoría de ríos y esteros de la zona, donde las denominadas planicies de inundación son humedales y bosques pantanosos que se inundan estacionalmente, las cuales muchas veces fueron reemplazadas en el pasado por praderas para la ganadería y luego utilizadas para el desarrollo urbano y parcelas de agrado.

Tomando en cuenta que en nuestra ciudad caen cerca de 2 metros de agua al año, y en ocasiones pueden caer 10 o 20 cm de agua en pocos días u horas, como ha ocurrido esta semana, es que resalta la importancia de proteger los humedales para su conservación y protección. Pero no solo para la protección de los animales, plantas y otros organismos que allí habitan sino también para todos los seres humanos que habitamos ciudad de Valdivia. Por ello es responsabilidad tanto del estado como propietarios y habitantes el velar por la protección, conservación y restauración de los humedales.
