Cualquier visitante de la selva valdiviana, en el sur de Chile, podría fácilmente ignorar la presencia del pequeño y modesto sapo de Mehuín, uno de los anfibios más raros del mundo.
La espalda punteada y marrón de esta rana, que se mezcla entre las riberas de los ríos y los lechos de los arroyos, la hace casi invisible para el ojo inexperto. Su resonante y prolongado chirrido es a menudo el único signo de esta especie al borde de la extinción
El sapo de Mehuín (Insuetophrynus acarpicus), también llamado rana de Barrio, está en la lista de especies en peligro crítico. Aunque alguna vez fue común en la región, ahora la especie vive solo en un área de bosque de 10 kilómetros cuadrados, fuera de las áreas protegidas y bajo la amenaza de la tala de árboles, la agricultura y la plantación de madera comercial que están fragmentando rápidamente lo que queda del bosque tropical templado de América del Sur.
Pero, junto con su primo en peligro de extinción, el sapo de Miguel (Eupsophus migueli), la rana de Barrio está saliendo de la sombra a medida que las comunidades locales se involucran y trabajan para conservar esta especie amenazada.
“No se trata de una especie carismática como el león africano o el hipopótamo”, dice el ganadero local Don Rigoberto, “pero tenemos una especie propia muy especial”.
Rigoberto, quien es secretario de la comunidad indígena mapuche Fucha Pitrem, es uno de los líderes locales que han encontrado apoyo en el proyecto “Conservando los sitios más irremplazables de la Tierra para la biodiversidad amenazada”, de la Alianza por la Cero Extinción que respalda por el Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (GEF).
Con una historia que se extiende por más de 120 millones de años, los bosques valdivianos de Chile y Argentina son un vínculo vivo con el pasado del planeta, hogar de una gama única de especies que se remontan al antiguo supercontinente de Gondwana. Esta región, que se asemeja a una isla biogeográfica separada de otros ecosistemas forestales de la era terciaria, ahora alberga más de 70% de las especies de plantas leñosas de Chile, así como una vasta riqueza animal, con el ciervo más pequeño del mundo o el pájaro carpintero más grande de América del Sur.
Pero también está bajo amenaza: solo sobrevive 40% de la cubierta forestal original. Además, lo que queda del bosque está cada vez más fragmentado, dividido por la industria y el desarrollo, y en gran medida está en manos de pequeños agricultores o empresas forestales comerciales. Esta fragmentación y el cambio en el uso de la tierra está empujando a especies como el sapo de Mehuín o el sapo de Miguel al borde de la extinción.
Con pocas áreas protegidas y gran parte del bosque en manos privadas, el equipo del proyecto Alianza por la Cero Extinción se dio cuenta de que la única forma de garantizar la preservación de la fauna de la región sería concienciar a las comunidades sobre estas especies y alentarlas a asumir un papel activo como cuidadores de su entorno único.
Reunir a las organizaciones locales e indígenas de la comunidad para desarrollar un plan de conservación del área fue uno de los primeros y más importantes pasos, relata Mike Parr, presidente de American Bird Conservancy, organización socia del proyecto.
“Este proyecto demuestra la importancia de una estrecha colaboración entre las comunidades locales y los profesionales de la conservación para lograr la protección de especies”, dice Parr.
Con un enfoque holístico de las actitudes alrededor de la tierra y su uso, el equipo reunió a representantes de la comunidad como Rigoberto para discutir sus medios de vida, el tipo de educación y el desarrollo de capacidades necesarias para mejorar sus prácticas agrícolas y de manejo forestal, y el papel que las comunidades locales podrían jugar en la protección de su tierra y su biodiversidad.
El resultado es un plan de conservación centrado en estrategias que cubren la colaboración público-privada, la educación y los medios de vida, cada uno con sus propias acciones diseñadas para beneficiar directamente tanto a las comunidades locales como a las especies amenazadas.
“El proyecto fortalece el trabajo que Villa Nahuel y otras comunidades indígenas han estado desarrollando durante mucho tiempo”, dice el líder de la comunidad indígena Villa Nahuel, Javier Nahuelpan.
“Está dando valor a los recursos naturales, los bosques nativos y la biodiversidad de nuestro territorio Lafkenche [uno de los seis pueblos indígenas mapuches]. Para nosotros esto ha sido muy importante, (…) esperamos que los resultados del proyecto sean conocidos por la población local y que nuestra tierra sea valorada porque es un lugar único en el mundo”, añadió.
Mirando hacia el futuro, el proyecto Alianza por la Cero Extinción también se está enfocando en los miembros más jóvenes de la comunidad en un esfuerzo por convertirlos en los campeones ambientales del mañana. Trabajando directamente con maestros y estudiantes en seis pequeñas escuelas rurales -algunas de las cuales tienen una o ambas especies de ranas literalmente en su patio-, el equipo ha desarrollado un programa de educación ambiental para concienciar sobre los anfibios en peligro y hacer sentir orgullosa a la comunidad por su papel de custodia.
Es un papel que los estudiantes están adoptando a medida que descubren y comienzan a comprender su propio lugar especial en la conservación del área. “Me divertí y aprendí mucho sobre las ranas”, dice José Miguel, un estudiante. “Quiero cuidarlos y que todos conozcan sobre estas ranas en casa, así no seré el único que se preocupa por ellas”.
José Colimillia, un profesor de la escuela We Liwen de 24 alumnos, considera que esta emoción que los alumnos se llevan a casa tiene el potencial de cambiar las actitudes en sus comunidades.
“Estamos aprendiendo a proteger y cuidar nuestros arroyos”, dice. “Estamos transmitiendo esto a toda la comunidad escolar, a las madres y padres, para que también cuiden el medio ambiente”.
Mientras tanto, los propietarios locales como Rigoberto están tomando sus propias medidas para preservar el hábitat del sapo Mehuín a través de prácticas cambiantes como el pastoreo abierto. Con el apoyo del proyecto y el Instituto de Desarrollo Agropecuario del Gobierno chileno, ahora ha construido una cerca para mantener a su ganado y al de sus vecinos fuera del bosque, impidiéndole compactar el suelo y contaminar el agua de los arroyos de los que dependen las ranas para su existencia.
Como siguiente paso, ahora está desarrollando un plan de manejo para su tierra que le permitirá complementar la conservación del hábitat de las ranas con actividades productivas, incluyendo un sendero forestal educativo para enseñar a los niños y turistas locales sobre la biodiversidad especial de la zona.
Es un logro del que tanto Rigoberto como las autoridades chilenas están orgullosos.
“Dos ranas chilenas endémicas tienen una oportunidad de recuperación con el proyecto Alianza por la Cero Extinción”, dice la jefa de la División de Recursos Naturales y Biodiversidad del Ministerio del Medio Ambiente, Alejandra Figueroa. “La cooperación entre las comunidades locales, el equipo GEF- Alianza por la Cero Extinción y el Ministerio del Medio Ambiente de Chile, que lidera el proyecto, muestra cuán importante es esta iniciativa para lograr los objetivos de conservación de estas dos especies emblemáticas para Chile y el mundo”, añadió.

La Alianza por la Cero Extinción: Conservando los sitios más irremplazables de la Tierra para la biodiversidad amenazada, es una asociación de respaldada por GEF con US $ 6.7 millones, entre ONU Medio Ambiente, BirdLife International, American Bird Conservancy, UICN y los gobiernos de Brasil, Chile y Madagascar para detener las extinciones globales y salvaguardar los hábitats de las especies en peligro de extinción.
La Alianza se está enfocando primero en las especies que se enfrentan a la extinción ya sea porque su hábitat remanente se está degradando a nivel local o porque sus pequeños hábitats globales los hacen especialmente vulnerables a las amenazas externas. Fuera del alcance de la Alianza, muchos de sus miembros también están trabajando para proteger a las especies altamente amenazadas que son de mayor alcance y requieren diferentes medidas de conservación.
