En estos 25 años lo he pasado súper bien trabajando fuerte en una Universidad prestigiosa, pujante y dinámica.
Cumplir 25 años de labor en la UACh es para el Ingeniero Forestal, Dr. Antonio Lara una “satisfacción muy grande y una emoción”. Son 25 años ejerciendo lo que lo apasiona: la docencia y las enseñanzas en terreno, pero también son largos años desarrollando ciencia enfocada al estudio de la dendrocronología: la reconstrucción del clima a través de los anillos de crecimiento de los árboles, labor que ha hecho en paralelo con la investigación de la dinámica de bosques, silvicultura, y luego a los servicios ecosistémicos.
“Es un orgullo ver crecer a los estudiantes y darme cuenta de que están muy abiertos y con opiniones claras”, expresa el Dr. Lara, a la vez que señala sentirse afortunado de haber obtenido siempre financiamiento ininterrumpido a través de concursos Fondecyt y otras fuentes nacionales e internacionales para desarrollar sus investigaciones.
Una de las iniciativas más importantes en las que ha participado es el Núcleo Científico Forecos, financiado por la Iniciativa Científica Milenio cuyas inv
estigaciones se transformaron en publicaciones en prestigiosas revistas científicas, dando origen a la Fundación Forecos en 2005 de la cual es presidente.
La relación entre los bosques y el agua es actualmente uno de los campos de estudio que ha desarrollado a través del Centro de Ciencias del Clima y la Resiliencia (CR)2, del cual es investigador principal. “Ha sido una experiencia enriquecedora trabajar con un amplio equipo de alrededor de 70 investigadores de las Universidades de Chile, Austral y de Concepción, y luego de 5 años hemos logrado avances significativos en ciencia y formación de investigadores y profesionales”, afirma.
Otro ámbito de acción muy satisfactorio para el Dr. Lara ha sido la vinculación con el medio externo y el haber aportado conocimiento para promover decisiones acertadas respecto a nuestros bosques y recursos naturales. Esto, a veces en su opinión, se ha transformado a veces en activismo en colaboración con otros actores. Un ejemplo de ello es cuando promovimos la Ley de Bosque Nativo junto al Prof. Claudio Donoso, proceso que duró 16 años”, recuerda. En este mismo sentido es que él junto a otros académicos, profesionales y propietarios crearon la Corporación de Conservación y Manejo Sustentable del Alerce hace 6 años atrás.
En el plano de la colaboración internacional, su labor no ha sido menor, ya que él y su equipo iniciaron una importante red de colaboración con IANIGLA, Argentina, cuyos lazos existen hasta el día de hoy. Sus vínculos se extienden de igual manera con investigadores de diversos países de América Latina y el Caribe, Canadá, Estados Unidos, y Europa donde ha sido parte o constituido redes formales de colaboración.
Enfocado en innovar
El académico también se ha destacado en cargos administrativos. Asumió dos períodos como Director del ex Instituto de Silvicultura y uno como Decano, siempre enfocado en hacer cambios e innovar. Ejemplo de ello es que en su mandato, y con el apoyo de los docentes, se cambió el nombre de la Facultad, pasando a ser Facultad de Ciencias Forestales y Recursos Naturales. Además se creó la Escuela de Ingeniería en Conservación de Recursos Naturales para atender la carrera creada un par de años antes en nuestra Facultad. “Logramos también que al momento de ser aprobada la Ley de Bosque Nativo en 2008 se incorporaran los Ingenieros en Conservación de Recursos Naturales, es decir, cuando aún no había ningún egresado de esta carrera ya estaban reconocidos por ley, abriéndoles el campo profesional”.
Finalmente el Prof. Lara expresa que “en estos 25 años lo he pasado súper bien trabajando fuerte en una Universidad prestigiosa, pujante y dinámica. Toda mi labor ha involucrado muchas más horas estipuladas en el contrato, pero lo he hecho con mucho amor por la UACh y sus estudiantes y he contado con el apoyo, comprensión e incluso complicidad de mi familia”.
