En el Centro de Ferias del Parque Saval de la ciudad de 
Valdivia, se realizó la Feria de la Sustentabilidad. Este evento realizado los días 7 y 8 de octubre 2016 fue organizado e
n conjunto por la Seremi de Medio Ambiente Región de Los Ríos, Universidad Austral de Chile, Municipalidad de Valdivia y Proyecto Asociativo Regional EXPLORA CONICYT Región de Los Ríos, con la colaboración del Ejército de Chile. Es la primera vez que se juntan estos cuatro organismos para organizar esta feria y abordar la sustentabilidad desde diferentes aspectos como la educación, la ciencia y el reciclaje. El público predilecto fueron los niños que llegaron acompañados por sus profesores o por sus familias.
Entre los expositores participaron agrupaciones estudiantiles, proyectos FPA, Parque Urbano El Bosque y la cooperativa Valdivianos sin Basura. En divulgación de la ciencia con enfoque en la sustentabilidad estuvieron la Fundación FORECOS y PAR EXPLORA CONICYT Región de Los Ríos.
La Fundación FORECOS mostró una exposición de fotografías de biodiversidad de los humedales además de realizar indagaciones científicas demostrativas. En particular, causó mucha curiosidad la indagación del “erosionómetro” realizada por Wara Marcelo, Secretaria ejecutiva (s) de la Fundación. Este consistió en tres cajones de madera que se llenaron con tierra, tierra de compost y tierra con cubierta de vegetación respectivamente, simulando tres laderas de cerro con diferentes tipos de cobertura. Luego se vertía un volumen conocido de agua, simulando lluvia y los visitantes debían responder ¿De qué color, qué cantidad de agua y cuánto tiempo tarda en llegar el agua hasta abajo, al regar suelos en cajones con tierra, tierra de compost y tierra con vegetación? Para después reflexionar sobre los resultados como por ejemplo ¿dónde es más probable que suceda un aluvión? ¿Dónde habrá más agua en el verano? ¿Qué podría ocurrir en cada una de las laderas? En el caso de que no llueva y haya viento o ¿Qué recomendaciones darían para evitar la erosión? Uno de los objetivos de estas indagaciones científicas era que los visitantes entendieran la base de porqué es importante realizar acciones concretas, como por ejemplo la plantación y restauración de laderas de cerros, entender qué hay detrás de esa acción. No sólo que lo haga como una instrucción sino que nazca desde ellos.
PAR Explora CONICYT por su parte mostró la ciencia de una forma dinámica y entretenida, mediante talleres de ilustración botánica a cargo de Andrea Leiva, tinción (teñido) de lanas con plantas nativas realizado por Marianne Meier y el uso de principios matemáticos para la construcción de estructuras de la ciudad mostrado por estudiantes y profesores del Colegios Los Conquistadores de Valdivia.
Por último, en el marco de la 4ª Campaña Reconéctate de recolección de residuos electrónicos, se hizo un llamado a toda la comunidad a llevar a la feria aquellos artefactos eléctricos y electrónicos que ya no se usen a nivel domiciliario o que estén en mal estado, juntando ocho toneladas de chatarra electrónica que se llevarán se trasladarán a la empresa Chilerecicla en Chillán, la que se encarga de recuperar para reciclaje partes de estos artefactos. Mientras que lo que no se recicla es enviado a Hidronor, empresa que se encarga de derivarlo a rellenos sanitarios que reúnen las condiciones para una disposición segura
