Protección de los bosques antiguos de la costa Valdiviana

“Yo protego el bosque antiguo valdiviano” es el lema que ha utilizado la ciudadanía para manifestarse en contra de la empresa española Acciona, que busca instalar 17 aerogeneradores en un terreno privado que colinda con el parque Oncol. Pero ¿Qué son los bosques antiguos?Noticia bosques antiguos 1
Antonio Lara, director de la Fundación FORECOS opina sobre los bosques antiguos, en el siguiente reportaje del diario Austral de Valdivia.

Los bosques antiguos son bosques que  han demorado muchos años en desarrollarse, entre cientos y miles de años en algunos casos. Y además tienen ciertas características y particularidades:
1) Son bosques con una estructura compleja, con varios estratos o capas. Es decir hay una alta heterogeneidad vertical, donde se observan árboles emergentes, otros dominantes y codominantes, árboles de una altura intermedia, un sotobosque de baja altura, junto con troncos y madera muerta en el suelo.
2) Son bosques con una alta biodiversidad, ya que la estructura del bosque entrega diferentes hábitats para una diversidad de especies y además ha pasado un tiempo importante para que exista un conjunto de especies diversas de plantas, animales, hongos y microorganismos de suelo viviendo en ellos.

Asimismo prestan una diversidad de servicios ecosistémicos. Por ejemplo, acumulando grandes cantidades de carbono, regulando de esta forma el clima. También proveen agua, la reciclan y colaboran con la regulación hídrica de los territorios. Y brindan oportunidades de turismo.

En Chile, estos bosques antiguos  solo se encuentran bosques antiguos entre las regiones de La Araucanía y Magallanes, pero su mayor densidad está entre las regiones de Los Lagos y Aysén, siendo cada vez más difícil encontrarlos.
