Estudio relaciona presencia de bosque nativo con mayor producción de agua

Siete años de trabajo en terreno y al fin vio la luz.  Se trata del primer estudio en Chile que establece los beneficios del bosque nativo en la provisión de agua y que logra cuantificarlos. Un trabajo que podría terminar con la sequía que acusan algunas cuencas del país en el periodo estival, cuando las lluvias dejan de aportar su cuota al cauce delos ríos.

Para el estudio que encabezó Antonio Lara, investigador responsable del Núcleo Milenio FORECOS de la Universidad Austral de Chile, se midió diariamente durante 4 años, en seis cuencas de 140 a 1460 hectáreas en la Cordillera de la Costa, en el área de Valdivia. Se tomaron en cuenta el porcentaje de cobertura de boque nativo de cada cuenca y el coeficiente de escorrentía – esto es, la relación entre el caudal y la precipitación anual- y la conclusión fue que los caudales y la producción de agua están correlacionados con el porcentaje de bosque nativo que cubre las cuencas. En números: un incremento del 10% en la cubierta de bosque nativo en las cuencas produciría un aumento del 14,1% en el caudal de verano.
